OUTDOOR ROBOTS :VERI II B

ERASEERELTERELHPCTPP

Generalities

Thanks to their rubber caterpillars, the outdoor robots are all-terrain vehicles. They can operate outside buildings where the situation does not allow human intervention without running physiological risks. All the outdoor robots are fitted with :

  • cameras
  • lightings
  • a gamma-goniometer
  • and an external temperature sensor.

The robots are remote controlled under video from an NBC* driving desk installed in non-hostile areas. All the data collected during the mission are processed by computer and allow a radiological mapping of inspected sites on which the route followed by the vehicle as well as radioactivity level values and the external temperature are shown. The system allows the video recording of the missions.

The robots generally consist of three "sub-systems" :

  • The robot
  • The driving desk put in non hostile area
  • The transmissions relays

They are fitted with a hydraulic remote-controlled manipulation arm.

*NBC : Ranked protection : Nuclear, Bacteriological, Chemical

2nd Generation Equipement

> Generalities

The feedback of VERI II B allows to conceive and realize a new robot concept.
These robots can perform the same missions as their predecessor but, thanks to an elaborated transmission system, they can be radio-controlled up to a distance of 10 km .
They are called ERASE, they are driven with a PP (Driving desk shelter) linked to a PCT (Central transmission shelter). The relays are called ERELT and ERELH.

VERI II B

> General description

VERI II B (Teleoperated Vehicle for Investigation 2B) VERI II B always forms part of the operational equipment of Groupe INTRA but is now reserved for possible non emergency missions.

Robot VERI II B can be teleoperated until a distance of 2 kilometers. It can complete work with its embarked hydraulic tools (shear, power pick and drilling machine).

> The NBC driving / command stations shelter.

It acts of a mobile unit since which takes place the piloting of the robot and the follow-up of the operations. Set up in a non hostile area, it has howewer a classified protection NBC * and an internal and external radiological supervision system. The whole of the system can be moved and to be operational very quickly.
*NBC : Ranked protection : Nuclear, Bacteriological, Chemical.

> The driving desk necessities two operators.

  • a pilot for the control of the robot,
  • a navigator for the general monitoring of the mission.

> The command station:
Joint to the driving desk, it enables INTRA managers to provide the interface with the authorities and the in-the-field operations coordination. They have all the required communication equipment as well as a video system control allowing them to follow the VERI 2B operations in real time.

> The radio relay station:
Manually set up in non hostile area, the radio relay station is an optional equipment. It is used when the environment presents difficulties for the transmissions. Set up on a trailer attached with a light vehicle, it is in charge of video transmissions either by radio links or fiber optics.

ERELT

> Missions

ERELT (Teleoperated Relay Robot)

  • Main mission :
To relay the transmissions (Radio-com-mands, radio-measurements, videos, sounds) from and towards other robots and to improve the radioelectrical coverage.
  • Related missions :
Visual inspection - Radioactivity and temperature measurement

> General description

ERELT is built on the same mechanical basis as ERASE but without arm. Its telescopic mast allows it to relay the transmission from and towards ERASE and EBENNE.
Groupe INTRA has two units.

> Operation

• In robot mode :
It is teleoperated from the driving desk up to a position which allows the radioelectric coverage of the vehicles working in the area. The optic fiber it has uncoilled assure a reliabl link with the command post.

• In relay mode
Put "on post", it passes under PCT control, unfolds the telescopic mast
and tracks the antennae so as to carry out its relay function during 80 hours. In robot mode, it can be remote controlled like an ERASE, without optic fiber, but in this case it cannot assume its relay function. Once the mission has been achieved, the vehicle goes back to the non-hostile area.

PCT second generation

The central transmission shelter

It consists of a mobile set from which the transmission general management and the in-process operations supervision are made. It is from this shelter that an operator manages all the radio links and programs the configuration of the different functions as well as videos, audios, data, computers, locally or on robots on board. A part of this shelter allows Groupe INTRA manager to ensure the on the spot operation coordination. He has all the required communication equipement at his disposal.

PP second generation

The driving desk shelter

It is equipped with two independent driving desks enabling the simultaneous driving and following of two robots.

Two operators are entrusted with the driving desks :

  • one operator for the driving part of the vehicle,
  • one navigator who is in charge of the general supervision of the mission (data transmitted by the vehicle, general state of the vehicle).
